Top 10 NFL Safeties

Top 10 NFL Safeties

In rating my safeties I broke it up into Top 5 for both the free & strong safety positions.

I prefer my free safeties to not only be able to cover ground but also be sure tacklers as well.

When it comes to the my strong safeties I like them to be thumpers than be that extra support in the box! With that being said lets get to it!

Top 5 Free Safeties

05) Oshiomogho Atogwe---5-11---205---Washington Redskins
Here is one the more unheralded players period on the defensive side of the ball. He is a big play performer, coming up with big play after big play with turnovers from opponents.

04) Reggie Nelson---5-11---206---Cincinnati Bengals
The first thing that comes to mind with this player is playmaker. He is truly a ball hawk through the air. If opposing quarterback are off the mark a bit....Mr. Nelson is there to pick up the pieces.

03) Michael Griffin---6-0---203---Tennessee Titans
He is a good blend of speed and physical mentality. Not only is he looking to make the big play in
the air...but he also is just as effective at delivering a smashing tackle to opponents. Once he laces
them up it's all business with this performer.

02) Louis Delmas---5-11---202---Detroit Lions
He is a true up and comer in the league. He is the most physical of the free safeties in the countdown. He is a safety who enjoys delivering initial contact to ball carriers....than bringing in that interception. He can make the big play through the air....but he gives any defense a physical presence!

01) Ed Reed---5-11---200---Baltimore Ravens
Reed may be a little long in the tooth....and may have some injury concerns.....but when it comes to the perfect blend of delivering the big play by ground & air......then he's your one! His ability to play center field may be unlike anyone that has ever played the game at the position. Though he may not be known as a knock out artist.....he more than makes his presence known in both areas of his game!

Top 5 Strong Safeties

05) T.J. Ward---5-10---2111---Cleveland Browns
He may be considered a bit undersized but he more than makes it up with the punishment he delivers on an every snap basis. He is young in the game...but there is a good chance you will be hearing from this stud for some time to come.

04) Brian Dawkins---6-0---210---Denver Broncos
Though he may have a few miles on his treads he still brings it between the hashes as good as most for the criteria of an in the box thumper at strong! Once he squares up and zeroes in on opposing ball carriers....it's like the warning noise from a rattler. It's too late to react by the time he strikes.

03) Pat Chung---5-11---212---New England Patriots
Chung may be somewhat of a surprise to some....but this is one talented balla ya best not mess with! He is a younger...bigger....more athletic version Troy Polamalu. The key is younger. At this point all he needs is snaps before he takes over as the games #1 SS. He is a fierce tackler...who possesses the instincts in the passing game to make plays through the air. Make sure and look for him!

02) Troy Polamalu---5-10---207---Pittsburgh Steelers
Here is an accomplished warrior here. Not only has he performed his excellence during the regular season but also in the playoffs and Super Bowl! He has been the ultimate at his position for some time now. There is a good chance you are looking at a 1st ballot Hall Of Famer here.

01) Bob Sanders---5-8---206---San Diego Chargers
That's right he is my #1 rated strong safety. Yes he may have been battling injuries over the last few years....and yes he may lack what some may say prototype size. But true ballas come in all shapes and sizes....and Sanders definitely fits that category. But when you're talking about a pure in-the-box safety.....he's ya man! He delivers such vicious hits to opponents that they look for him before he gets to them. he is a throwback performer of the days of old when physicality was the number one trait when the game was dictated by physical play. Had it not been for the injuries....there is no doubt in my mind that he would and still could be HOF material!
